PAPER & CARDBOARD

SURFACE TREATMENT OF PAPER AND CARDBOARD

Today, paper and cardboard are multi-layered, laminated products, especially in the industrial sector. The various layers are chosen and combined to produce a final product with custom-made properties for their intended use.

Plasma treatment can enhance the adhesion between these material layers during the production of the laminated material. In many instances, this allows for a reduction in the use of environmentally harmful adhesives, primers, and other chemicals. Instead, a dry, clean, and harmless plasma treatment is employed.

However, the benefits of plasma treatment aren’t confined to the production process. Converters working with paper and cardboard can also utilize plasma treatment to boost the adhesion of paint, lacquers, adhesives, and coatings.

CHARACTERISTICS

We are proud of our growing global customer base, which includes manufacturers of film production lines, finishers, film producers, and research companies. Naturally, the portfolio of products offered by SOFTAL is just as multi-faceted as our customer base. This is made possible by the modular design of our treatment systems, allowing for customer-specific changes and the rapid development of new systems and processes. This ideal starting point enables us to meet customer demands and achieve results. Guaranteed.

SOFTAL has been part of the corona and plasma industry for more than half a century. Our engineers and developers know what really matters at the end of the production day. Factors like easy maintenance and service, low operating costs, long life, and optimum operator safety are considered early in the development process to ensure maximum user-friendliness and uptime.

The numerous hardware and software solutions provided by our treatment systems ensure seamless integration into customer-specific systems and processes. Starting from proven standard components, our systems can be tailored to suit any material and/or process. We specialize in the surface treatment of your materials, so you can focus on your core business.

Shape, material, and position of the corona electrode assembly, along with the characteristics of the related treater roll, determine the homogeneity and efficiency of the plasma discharge. Constant further development of our electrodes has generated a number of patents, including our Intelliblade™ electrode and our liquid-cooled ceramic electrodes, both of which have been tried and tested hundreds of times.

Most plastic film producers subject their films to a plasma surface treatment immediately after production. However, because the treatment effect diminishes over time, the surface energy of the film is often inadequate for optimal results by the time of conversion. In these instances, converters apply a so-called refresher corona treatment to the material. This enhances surface energy, increases wettability, and enables the converter to achieve the best possible results.

In the Linear Plasma process, the plasma is generated „above“ the material to be treated and is blown onto the material. An external counter electrode is eliminated, and with it, the technical limitation of material thickness. At the same time, the problem of cavity treatment in materials with air inclusions or chambers is reliably resolved.
