Corona is a versatile means which can be used in various fields

a) Blown film extruders

The extrusion of blown films is the most common SOFTAL corona treatment application and is mainly used for double-side treatment of polyethylene films.

Even though these films often contain considerable amounts of slip additives, the SOFTAL multiblade electrodes designed and patented for this purpose can easily raise the surface tensions up to 48 dynes/cm and more. These electrodes are also available in differently segmented dimensions to allow case related heat sealing in specific areas of the untreated surface. Two open-designed and easy-to-install SOFTAL corona station modules is all it takes to run a four-side inline treatment of both inner and both outer surfaces of a slitted tube. Adhesion guaranteed.

b) Cast film extrusion

The cast film extrusion technology is known all over the world as a field of application for SOFTAL corona treatment, especially for polypropylene films. Although these films require a much higher specific energy than polyethylene films and are processed at higher speeds, SOFTAL provides extremely reliable and optimized corona systems. These corona systems are powered by high-end generator systems with patented electrodes and other well-adapted peripheral devices. c) Biorientation systems (MDO and TDO)

Widths up to 10 m and more as well as speeds of more than 500 m/min are treated using the patented SOFTAL electrodes with an electrode gap of 1.5 mm. The system is usually installed in the TDO upstream of the rewinding unit. Adhesion guaranteed.

d) Laminating machines

f) Printing machines

Hardly any of the corresponding materials such as PP, PE, PA, PET, single-layered or multilayered, metal coated, as part of a laminate or similar, would be printable without corona treatment. This is why most of these materials receive inline treatment during the manufacturing processes before being moved to the printing machines.

As flexible as the corona treatment is, it's adhesive effect on a web is temporary: The slow diffusion of various types and amounts of additives on the web’s surface during storage of the reels reduces the corona induced surface tension within hours, weeks or months. At the time of printing, of the adhesion capacity has often been severely diminished.
